Immersed in total darkness, the ASCEND journey begins in the cold, silent waters of Lac de Lourdes. At 3:00 AM, only the glow of red and green headlamps breaks through the night. The sacred calm of the lake, under the shadow of the Lourdes sanctuaries, contrasts sharply with the inner tension of the athletes.
The 3.8 km swim forms a dark, mythical loop - an initiation into the extreme.

FAQ – ASCEND XTRI Swim
What time does the swim start?
The swim starts at 3:00 AM, in total darkness, for a truly extreme experience from the very first stroke.
What is the water temperature?
The Lourdes lake is typically between 13°C and 15°C during [race month]. The official temperature will be measured and confirmed the day before the race.
Is a wetsuit mandatory?
Yes. A full wetsuit is mandatory (in compliance with XTRI regulations). Neoprene gloves and socks are allowed and recommended if the water is colder than 14°C.
Is a light required?
Yes.
A tow float with a light inside will be provided by the race.
Will there be safety support on the water?
Yes. A safety team will accompany swimmers throughout the course, using kayaks and paddleboards. Key navigation points and buoys will be marked with lights.
What is the swim course like?
The course will be a 3.8 km loop in the lake. It will be clearly marked with illuminated buoys and verified by the organization and local authorities. A full race briefing will be held the day before the event.
Can I preview the swim course in advance?
Yes, open water swim reconnaissance is possible in the days leading up to the race. Swimming in the lake is allowed, but at your own risk. The organization will not provide safety cover before race day.
